What is your Big Idea for Philadelphia?
#ISeeALegacy
Legacy Business: a small business that has existed for more than 30 years and has made a significant contribution to the city’s identity.
Have you ever found yourself standing in freezing weather for 45 minutes outside of Stock’s Bakery in hopes of retrieving a pound cake to bring home for the holidays? Have you ever taken a quick detour to pick-up Beiler’s donuts before a big meeting? When family and friends visit from out-of-town, do you take them to Ralph’s, Dalessandro’s, Bridget Foy’s, or the Famous 4th Street Deli? These small neighborhood institutions are as much a vital part of the city and its identity as the historic built environment that we seek to preserve.
The Young Friends of the Preservation Alliance (YFPA) will discuss how legacy businesses contribute to cultural heritage in Philly, and the benefits of increasing awareness, and developing policy to assist these local businesses amidst the difficulties of a rapidly developing city. Highlighting lessons learned in San Francisco, the only American city that has implemented policy to protect and advocate for legacy businesses, the YFPA will encourage critical thinking and discussion on the next steps for legacies in Philly. #Iseealegacy #savingplaces
